Woman flees after causing car accident in New York

On Behalf of | Feb 23, 2016 | Car Accidents

When a parked vehicle was struck by another vehicle along a New York roadway, the driver got out to assess the scene and speak with the owner of the struck vehicle. They became victims of a horrific car accident when a vehicle operated by a woman from Long Island hit them and their vehicles. That driver apparently fled the scene.

The tragedy followed the first accident, in which a 28-year-old man’s car hit the parked car. That vehicle was owned by a 58-year-old woman. The woman whose vehicle struck them is reported to be 61 years old.

The owner of the parked car was transported to a hospital for treatment of injuries that were reported to be serious. The male victim was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Two passengers in his car needed medical attention for injuries described as minor. The woman whose vehicle hit them was found and arrested at another location and now faces charges of leaving the scene of an accident involving a fatality along with other accusations.

The victims who were injured and the family of the man who lost his life in this car accident have legal options. The injured victims may each file a personal injury lawsuit in a New York civil court against the woman believed responsible, seeking a monetary judgment for any financial losses. For the family of the young man, a wrongful death claim may be pursued. These types of legal claims for damages will require proof of negligence that is found to have caused or substantially contributed to the crash that occurred.
