Out of everyone who could be involved in a car accident, pedestrians are perhaps the most vulnerable. New York City, however, is packed full of pedestrians every day, making it all the more important for drivers to operate their vehicles carefully. When a driver fails to be aware of his or her surroundings, serious accidents can occur. Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened just a few days ago in New York.
For reasons that are as of yet unknown, the driver of an SUV lost control of the vehicle and went careening through a Midtown crosswalk that was full of pedestrians. Among the six people who were injured was an 11-month-old baby and his parents.
While the parents are expected to recover from their injuries, the baby sustained serious head injuries and in critcal condition. A witness to the pedestrian accident said that the baby's stroller was completely destroyed in the collision.
As a pedestrian, there is no way to protect yourself from a crash like this. You can cross a street inside the crosswalk and when the light indicates you can go, but you cannot control the actions of others. But when the actions of others cause injury to you or your child, you can hold the driver accountable.
Although police have announced that they will not file criminal charges in this situation, injured victims can still file a personal injury lawsuit. Personal injury lawsuits can allow victims to seek compensation for medical bills and other damages incurred in the crash, allowing you to focus on healing rather than making ends meet.
