A crash in Brookhaven took the life of one person and sent two more to the hospital. According to the police report, the accident occurred on Aug. 31 a little before 4 p.m. close to the intersection of Montauk Highway and Horseblock Road.
A woman driving a 2004 Chevy Malibu was attempting to make a turn off of Horseblock Road onto Montauk Highway when she struck a 2011 Chrysler 300. Both drivers were taken to a local medical center for treatment of non life-threatening injuries. A passenger inside the Malibu was killed as a result of the car accident. The woman driving the Malibu was charged with reckless driving. She was released on bail and has a court appearance scheduled for Nov. 4. Police are continuing to investigate the accident.
The loss of a loved one due to another person's reckless or careless driving may leave surviving family members dealing with emotional and financial distress. There may be medical bills, funeral expenses and the loss of that person's income. In some cases, the at-fault driver's insurance company may refuse to pay compensation.
An experienced New York personal injury attorney might be able to help surviving family members obtain a fair settlement. The attorney may have significant resources that could help when dealing with insurance companies. The attorney may handle most of the details, including negotiations and paperwork, relieving the family of stress. In the event that the insurance company refuses to pay a fair settlement to the family, the attorney may request a trial in civil court. The attorney may present an argument on the family's behalf. If the argument is compelling, the jury might find in favor of the plaintiffs.
