Concrete barrier may have prevented fatal collision

The president of the Federation of Taxi Drivers says that a fatal crash in the Bronx could have been prevented. For years, the group has been a proponent of installing concrete medians on New York City roads to prevent car accidents. Recent statements by the group’s president were made after an accident occurred that involved an SUV, a livery cab and another vehicle.

While traveling along the Hutchinson River Parkway at approximately 7 a.m. on Nov. 9, the driver of an SUV hit a guardrail near Orchard Beach Road. The vehicle then reentered traffic and collided with a livery cab, causing the cab to hit a third vehicle. Police have confirmed that the 51-year-old and 54-year-old occupants of the cab were both killed. Another person suffered from serious injuries and two others received minor injuries. The drivers of the third vehicle and of the SUV were among those who were injured.

While speaking about the tragedy, the Federation of Taxi Drivers president explained what could have been done to prevent accident. The man said that a concrete barricade would have stopped the SUV from driving back into traffic. He argued that the studier barrier would have stopped the SUV and its driver from traveling into oncoming traffic, which may have limited the extent of the damage.

With evidence such as police records and witness testimony, the injured victims in this case may be able to build a personal injury claim against the driver at fault. If they choose to file a lawsuit, victims may seek compensation for medical expenses and lost wages that have resulted from the accident.
