A 45-year-old New York male journalist was reportedly beaten on Jan. 17 near West 54th Street and Seventh Avenue. According to the report, police believe that the beating was a possible hate crime as the man’s wallet was not taken following the attack.

The journalist, who was active in New York’s gay community and Filipino community, was found just steps from his apartment in a pool of his own blood. He reportedly suffered serious brain injuries was but was recovering at St. Luke’s Hospital when news of the incident was released. The man’s husband stated that he had to undergo brain surgery as a result of the attack.

The journalist did not have any memory of the incident. However, a tipster was able to provide a basic description of someone who may have been involved. The person who was accused of injuring the journalist was described as a Hispanic man in his 20s, police said. He was thought to be approximately 6 feet tall with short black hair.

Assaults that end with a brain injury can potentially cause the person who suffers the injury to face mental and physical impairment. While this impairment is often temporary, a brain injury can potentially lead to a permanent impairment that could have a major impact on the rest of the individual’s life.

Those who are injured in an assault may be eligible for compensation under personal injury law. In cases like this where the accused assailant’s identity is not known, the injured person could seek compensation from their own insurance if their policy covers it. If, however, the accused person is found, the injured individual could opt to file the lawsuit against them and their insurance firm.
