Dirt bike strikes pedestrians at intersection

Two pedestrians in New York were injured when an unregistered and uninsured dirt bike struck them at a Bronx intersection. The accident occurred on Third Avenue and 188th Street at about 3 p.m. on March 21.

According to a New York Police Department representative, a dirt bike attempted passing a Toyota as the car turned, and the bike crashed into its left side. The dirt bike driver was thrown, and the bike continued without him to where it struck an 85-year-old woman and a 55-year-old man.

The 25-year-old driver of the dirt bike and both pedestrians were taken to the hospital. Police reported the pedestrians’ conditions as stable, but the biker was declared dead. The driver of the sedan stayed at the intersection and did not ask for medical care. The accident is currently under examination by the collision investigation team of the New York Police Department.

Pedestrian accidents may result in severe injury to individuals because they lack physical protection against such an impact. Motor vehicle drivers are obligated to be alert for changing road conditions, other drivers and pedestrians. Accident reconstruction analysis may be able to determine if turn signals were employed prior to this accident by assessing witness accounts or the placement of the vehicles when the accident occurred. Using this information, authorities may determine who might be responsible for the crash.

A driver also is required to insure and register their vehicle. Dirt bikes are not allowed to be registered or driven on the street in New York. If a motorist drives illegally, this may be used against them if they are involved in an accident that hurts someone else. An attorney may offer an injured individual guidance and insight into their situation.
