An accident between a garbage truck and a delivery truck on April 22 resulted in serious injuries to two individuals. Witnesses at the scene of the auto accident, which occurred near New York City’s Columbus Circle at about 5:30 a.m., say that the privately owned garbage truck hit the delivery truck from the back.
The incident occurred on Ninth Avenue near 58th Street. According to a witness, the delivery truck had come to a stop in order to make a delivery when it was hit by the southbound garbage truck. The witness reported hearing a very loud sound when the collision occurred. The two men injured were the driver of the delivery truck and a sanitation worker associated with the garbage truck, and they were transported to Bellevue and Cornell Hospitals.
One of the men, who the witness said was not bleeding or moving, was placed onto a stretcher and fitted with neck brace before being taken to the hospital via ambulance. The owner of the company that owns the garbage truck said his worker suffered a cut on his calf that required medical attention and implied that he does not mind replacing the truck so long as the worker recovers.
While these workers will likely have their medical expenses covered through workers’ compensation claims, not all who suffer injuries in auto accidents have that benefit. Through the state’s no-fault insurance laws, every person’s own insurance coverage is to be used for their medical expenses and other recovery costs following an accident. There are times, however, when people’s injuries are so severe that their insurance policies will not cover enough of the costs. At these times, they could consider filing claims against whoever caused the accident.
