Police took into custody a driver suspected of being involved in a hit-and-run accident in the Kensington neighborhood of Nassau County that claimed the life of a minor pedestrian. The fatal event reportedly transpired on Nov. 20 at about 5 p.m.

A 14-year-old pedestrian was crossing East Seventh Street at the Caton Avenue intersection when he was hit by a Chevrolet Impala, purportedly. Police said that the pedestrian was in the crosswalk at the time of the accident. Allegedly, the car continued to travel away from the accident scene following the impact, and its driver did not stop to render assistance.

The incident caused serious accident injuries to the pedestrian, who received emergency transport to Maimonides Hospital, authorities reported. Ultimately, officials pronounced the 14-year-old pedestrian dead at the hospital. Police located a 78-year-old woman after a short investigation and detained her on suspicion of felony leaving the scene of an accident causing serious injury. She was also charged with failure to exercise due care, reportedly.

Following a fatal incident like the one in Kensington on Nov. 20, bereaved families may choose to consult with an attorney about the tenability of a wrongful death lawsuit in connection with the death of their loved one. In this way, certain family members of the decedents may seek to hold liable the parties suspected to be responsible for the deadly crash. Such legal action may be filed and pursued entirely independently from any criminal proceedings that may stem from the same incident and involve the selfsame defendant. Claimants who prevail in a wrongful death suit stand to be awarded substantial restitution for the many losses they suffered as a consequence of the traffic accident.
