A woman, age 46, was critically injured after she was struck by a hit-and-run driver on Nov. 5 in Brooklyn. A photo of the car that reportedly was involved in the accident has been released by police.

The accident happened around 12:30 p.m. at an intersection. The vehicle, according to reports, was traveling northbound when the driver went through a red traffic light, striking the woman as she walked in the crosswalk. Witnesses at the scene said the vehicle then sped away from the scene.

The woman reportedly suffered a head injury and was described as being unconscious and unresponsive immediately after the accident. She was transported to Lutheran Medical Center. Officials said her condition was stable on Nov. 7.

Pedestrian accidents may happen due to a driver’s inattention to changing traffic signals, as in this case, speeding, distracted driving or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. When a driver abandons the reasonable care they must exercise, they may be considered negligent and liable. A driver also has the responsibility to stop and render aid in the event that an individual is injured in an accident. Leaving the scene of an accident may involve criminal charges for an at-fault driver.

Serious accident injuries may result in a long period of recuperation, high medical costs and rehabilitation. In addition, lost time at work may provide further financial strain. An injured individual may decide to seek remedies in civil court. An attorney may assist the victim in filing a personal injury lawsuit to recover damages.
