Head-on crash allegedly due to drunk driving

A two-vehicle crash in New York critically injured one driver and seriously injured two others on Dec. 8 when one vehicle hit the other head on. Multiple firefighting units were on hand to assist sheriff’s deputies at the crash site, and officials indicated that alcohol was involved.

A wrong-way driver is facing charges of DWI, failure to stay right and driving without a license. The Baldwinsville resident remains in intensive care at an area hospital.

The accident happened in Lysander on Route 370 at about 6:12 p.m. The driver of a 2001 Impala crossed into the southbound lanes of Route 370, hitting a Dodge Caravan heading south on the highway, according to a representative of the sheriff’s office in Onondaga County. The front ends of both vehicles were destroyed in the crash.

The driver of the Impala was freed from the wreckage and transported to Upstate University Hospital where she was in intensive care as of the time of this report. The Dodge van driver, a resident of Syracuse, was also injured in the collision. The 49-year-old woman was taken to the hospital, treated and released. Her passenger was also transported to the hospital and reported to be in stable condition, officials said.

According to police reports, both drivers and the passenger were wearing seat belts. The accident caused road closure for about three hours while crews cleared the site, and an investigation proceeded.

Individuals injured in a car accident with a negligent drunk driver may experience immediate medical issues, or symptoms of long-term problems may become apparent as time passes. Consulting with an attorney after an accident may help the injured individuals recover pecuniary damages to potentially cover medical bills and lost wages in a civil suit.
