Many people choose to bike throughout urban areas, and this method of transportation is generally regarded as safe when proper precautions are taken and the rules of the road are honored. Despite safety rules and laws, New York residents who rely on bicycles to get around the city are still at risk of becoming involved in a car accident. Unfortunately, a New York woman recently lost her life as she rode her bicycle across a city bridge.
The 27-year-old woman, who was from the Bronx, was riding her bike on City Island Bridge. Just before midnight on a Friday night, police were alerted to a collision on the bridge involving a bicyclist. When they arrived, the woman was unconscious. She suffered what was described as severe head trauma and was unresponsive.
She was taken to a nearby medical facility but was pronounced dead from her injuries. According to authorities, she was struck by a Hyundai Genesis and the driver fled the accident scene in that white 2015 vehicle. Police are currently investigating but have not yet made an arrest in the case.
If and when police locate the driver who is said to have left the scene of this car accident, that driver may face both criminal and civil consequences. Apart from any criminal charges filed by the government, the family of the young New York woman who lost her life may be entitled to pursue a claim damages by filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver whose vehicle hit her. A successfully navigated wrongful death suit is one option that may help a family left behind deal with the financial losses that typically result from losing a loved one in this manner.
