Imagine sitting down for a leisurely meal of wine and pasta with family members or a date at your favorite Italian restaurant, only to have your meal abruptly ended when a car crashes through the eatery’s windows.
That’s what diners at Mamaroneck’s Enzo’s Ristorante experienced last weekend. At approximately 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, a driver backing out of a designated handicapped parking space lost control for unknown reasons and accelerated into the floor-to-ceiling windows fronting the restaurant.
Diners and dinners were sent flying in the melee. Three patrons suffered critical injuries, while numerous others suffered from less serious injuries.
Authorities viewed surveillance footage of the incident that recorded a red vehicle as its driver attempted to back out of the parking place adjacent to the the Westchester County restaurant.
Before it struck the building, the car struck a white vehicle in the street as it continued reversing at a high rate of speed.
The Mamaroneck mayor was eating at another establishment in the area of the accident. He told a local news source that several patrons were taken to local hospitals for treatment of their injuries.
Names of victims or the driver have yet to be released, and their conditions at this time remain unknown.
While the cause of this accident is not yet known, clearly the driver of the car that struck the restaurant is at fault. As such, those patrons inside will likely be able to file insurance claims and/or litigation in the ensuing months as they recover from their injuries. This is important, as medical bills from serious auto accidents can quickly mount.
