Staying safe in the extreme cold on a construction site

On Behalf of | Feb 15, 2019 | Construction Accidents

The winters in New York can be unforgiving. From ice to snow to sleet to freezing rain; there’s just too much going on that can cause you injuries. If you work in construction you know that the weather plays a major role in whether or not you can complete a project on time. Working construction in the winter can be dangerous, especially in the extreme cold temperatures, so be sure to follow the safety tips presented today.

Make sure you dress appropriately. If you know ahead of time that you will be assigned an outdoor task on the construction site in the extreme cold, you need to wear appropriate clothing. This means covering as much of your skin as possible to avoid frostbite.

Try to take breaks from the cold. Your foreman should have no problem granting you additional breaks throughout the day since you are working in extreme conditions. The break doesn’t have to be a break from all work, just from work outside in the cold. Move indoors for an hour or so to warm up and perform other tasks.

Stay as dry as possible. The more damp your clothes become, the more likely you are to get sick or suffer frostbite. So, if you are working outside and it is raining or snowing, you need to have a change of clothes with you.

Suffering an injury or illness on the job is never easy. You will likely miss time at work that puts you behind the eight ball when it comes to paying the bills. Don’t let a workplace injury put you in a severe financial situation. Protect your rights and consult a construction accidents attorney.
