Be safe this weekend on the highway

On Behalf of | May 24, 2019 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Where will you be spending your Memorial Day weekend this year? Will you be staying right here in New York City or be like the other nearly 43 million Americans who are kicking off Summer 2019 with a road trip?

If it’s the latter choice, you must prepare yourself for the congested highways you will likely face. This year’s travel predictions represent a 3.6% uptick over 2018 and also are on target to be the second highest year for traffic volume since 2000. Most travelers will take to the roads to reach their destinations, AAA predicts.

Gas prices recently rose a bit, averaging about $3 per gallon across the nation. Typically, a hike in fuel costs mean that more Americans stay home or at least shorten their planned destinations accordingly.

New York City typically sees a large influx of visitors over the Memorial Day holiday, and this year will be no different. The top three destinations for those looking to leave home are Orlando, New York and Las Vegas.

All the increased traffic will make accidents more likely to occur. Motorists should plan their trips with plenty of additional time to get to their destinations to allow for traffic jams, accidents and detours.

They should also make sure to drive defensively, as this can help them avoid getting into a highway collision. Those who do wind up injured in auto accidents due to other motorists’ negligence should take the necessary steps to preserve their rights to sue the liable parties for any injuries, losses and damages that arise from the accidents in which they were injured.
