A New York woman was killed in an accident on Jan. 11 just yards away from her apartment. The pedestrian accident occurred just before 5:30 p.m. on East Tremont Avenue in the Bronx. The 32-year-old mother of two was crossing the street after running an errand at a nearby store. According to police, she was struck by a 28-year-old driver.
The victim was knocked unconscious and passed away before reaching a hospital. Witnesses say the damage the car sustained indicates just how hard the woman was hit. The car had a shattered windshield and a dent in the hood. Area residents say that the area has seen pedestrian accidents in the past. An accident several years ago reportedly resulted in three pedestrian deaths.
Police believe the driver of the car was intoxicated at the time of the accident. He was not injured but does face charges of aggravated driving while intoxicated. He also had two minors as passengers in the car and could face additional charges driving drunk with children in the vehicle.
In addition to facing criminal charges, the driver could also face wrongful death litigation from the victim’s family. She had two young children at home, so her death and the loss of her income could cause financial hardship for the family. They could file suit for compensation to alleviate the hardship, as well as for other damages related to the accident, like medical bills, final expenses and pain and suffering.
