New York sports fans may be interested to learn that, on Feb. 20, it was reported that two men who were involved in an assault in April 2011 that left one man with severe brain damage were sentenced. According to the report, the assault, which occurred in the parking lot at Dodger Stadium, was reported prompted as a result of rivalry between the two different teams that were playing at the time.

The 45-year-old man who was assaulted was left with permanent disabilities and required two years of rehabilitation. Once he returned home, his sister described the amount of care that he required, including around-the-clock assistance. She stated that they had to dress him, feed him and give him his 13 medications.

One of the accused men, age 31, was sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to one count of mayhem. He was given credit for the three years that he had already served. The other man was sentenced to four years in prison for assault, with credit for the time that he had already served. However, both men also face federal charges associated with weapon possession. If convicted of these charges, they could face an additional 10 years in prison.

In addition to the criminal case against the two men involved in the assault, the family also filed a civil lawsuit against the entire Dodgers organization and against the former owner of the team. It was not stated how much the family was seeking.

When innocent victims suffer serious injuries that are caused by another person, the family may face medical expenses and rehabilitation costs. By filing a personal injury lawsuit against the owner of the property that the assault occurred on, the family may be able to recoup some of those medical costs in the form of financial compensation.
